General Registration
Can I vote?
You can register to vote if you are a United States citizen, resident of Contra Costa County, 18 years of age or older on Election Day, not in prison or on parole, serving a state sentence in a county jail, or serving a sentence for a felony, nor ruled incompetent by a court of law.

How can I register to vote?
Complete a brief voter registration Online Registration Form or complete and mail a Federal Postcard Form .

Is voter registration information confidential?
No. However the information can be used only for election, scholarly, journalistic, political or governmental purposes as determined by the Secretary of State.

Voters’ social security number, driver license number, and signature are not released.

Registration Deadlines

What is the deadline to register to vote?
You can register to vote anytime, but to be eligible for an election, you must be registered 15 days prior to Election Day. If you mail your application, it must be postmarked not later than the deadline to register.

What if I start to fill out the online voter registration but don’t finish until after midnight on the 15th day before the Election, am I too late?
You must submit the online voter registration application by midnight on the registration deadline day. However, your registration will still be processed. Once processed, you will be able to vote in future elections but not the current election.

How can I find out if I’m registered to vote?
Simply go to the Registration Lookup box and submit your name and birthdate.

When do I have to update my registration?
You need to update your registration if you move to a new address, change your name, or change your political party choice.

Where can I obtain proof of registration?
You can visit our office or call to request a proof of registration.

I moved outside Contra Costa County, how do I cancel my registration?
You can visit our office or send a letter of cancellation to:

Military and Citizens Overseas

Can military personnel register and receive a ballot?
You can register to vote and request a ballot if you meet the voter eligibility requirements, and are an active member of the U.S. Military or U.S. Merchant Marine or a dependent member.

Can citizens living overseas register and receive a ballot?
You can register to vote and receive a Vote by Mail ballot if you are a U.S. citizen living outside of the United States who meet the voter eligibility requirements and whose last place of residence was in Contra Costa County.

How can I obtain a Voter Registration Application?
Besides the Online Registration Form, you can visit the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) website to complete the FVAP assistant form. The form with the original signature still needs to be sent to our office.

You can also obtain copies of the Voter Registration and Vote by Mail Form from a Voting Assistance Officer, U.S. Embassy, or Consulate.
